In October, Senior News tunes up for a sing-along with “Musical Humboldt,” our tribute to this most harmonious place in the redwoods.
The latest edition of Senior News is a tour from symphony to kazoo, from classic rock to Dolly Parton to Janis Joplin, from community choirs to song circles. Humboldt County is fertile ground for music of all kinds and in all places.
“You can’t swing a piano around here without hitting six or eight musicians and a dozen music lovers,” observes editor Ted Pease. “I’m sure I’m not not the only guy with a guitar in the bedroom.”
October kicks off with two great local musical events — the 34th Redwood Coast Music Festival from October. 1-4 and Porchfest in Sunny Brae on Oct. 4. That’s just the beginning.
Special thanks to this month’s contributors (from front to back): Seabury Gould, Mark Larson, Bob Doran, Kevin Hoover, all those who nominated songs about aging, Elizabeth Morrison, Dr. Jennifer Heidmann (and Monk!), Julie Fulkerson, Lori Cole, Barbara Clark, Susan Bennett, Ray Moisa, Wesley Chesbro, John Heckel, Kevin Sharkey, Kim Coelho, Andrea Richardson, Shinazy, Tracey Barnes-Priestley, Katherine Almy, Michele Francesconi, Peter Pennekamp, Lynn McKenna, Chip Sharpe, Roy Grieshaber, Janet Krull, Louise Bacon-Ogden, Calyx the cat, Scott Baker, Doug Ingold, Jeff Johnson, Carol Moné, Bob Fornes, Patty Harvey and Evelyn Wiebe-Anderson. What a lineup!
German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche once wrote, “Without music, life would be a mistake.” For that and many other reasons, living in Humboldt is no mistake.
