The May issue of Senior News goes to the doctor for a check-up on the “Health of Humboldt 2026.” This special issue follows on last year’s May issue on “Health Care & Aging in Humboldt.” Papers hit the streets Thursday, 4/30, and both the new website and the e-edition will be available at humboldtseniornews.org/.
Last year’s healthcare issue helped spur community conversations about the impacts of medical challenges — access, provider shortages, etc. — across our area, from business and economic development to population growth and educational opportunities. This new issue is an update. While there is reason for optimism about medical resources in Humboldt, as always, much needs to be done.
“Health in Humboldt 2026” is a great issue. We hope you enjoy it and that this latest Senior News conversation on health care will help move the process along. Any feedback on Next Steps will be welcome by everyone.
Senior News is a program of the Humboldt Senior Resource Center, a free monthly community newspaper published since 1981 and circulating about 7,500 copies.
While we have your attention, here’s what’s coming up.
- JUNE’s Senior News will give a nod to both Mothers’ Day (May 10) and Fathers’ Day (June 21); and, while we’re at it, let’s through in our siblings. So if you have stories for an issue we would call “Mothers & Fathers, Sisters & Brothers” if it would fit across the page, let’s hear them! These might be loving memories of Mom (or Dad), or humorous and affectionate (or serious and dark) tales of your Parental Units. Plus stories of catching snakes, summer camp, fishing expeditions or pillow fights gone wrong with your sibs. Send your familial fare to tpease@humsenior.org, 400-500 + photos, by May 12.
- JULY marks Independence Day as usual — but this year it’s #250. So we’ll go all red-white-and-blue in Senior News, with tales of patriotism, what America means to you, hot dogs, bunting, parades fireworks and the benefits, rights and responsibilities of life here in the land of the free and the home of the brave. Seems like a good year to pay extra attention to the health, past and future of the “American Experiment,” 250 years old this summer. As usual, 400-500 words plus photos to tpease@humsenior.orgby June 12.
Thank you for you support of seniors and Senior News here in Humboldt County. We couldn’t exist without your stories. Keep ’em coming!
Please send along your fine words! Thank you, gentle readers, as always, for your support of Senior News — For people 50+ and everyone who knows one or wants to be one someday.
